Chapter 2: The Two-Bucket Barbell Architecture and Yield-to-Alpha Sweep Engine

Saturday, November 7, 2026 · Co-Authors: Woojong Koh, Sam Campbell, Daeki Lee

1. Structural Philosophy of the Barbell

Traditional wealth management forces families into the fragile middle: moderate-risk balanced portfolios of 60/40 public stocks and bonds or high-fee fund-of-funds that underperform in inflationary regimes and correlate toward 1.0 during liquidity crises.

Project Barbell replaces the fragile middle with a mathematically bounded Two-Bucket Barbell Architecture:

2. Option-Based Portfolio Insurance (OBPI) and Self-Funding Alpha

Let (W_0) denote initial portfolio principal, (r_f) denote the blended net annual yield of Bucket 1, and (F = \alpha W_0) denote the hard principal protection floor over horizon (T). The maximum deployable risk budget (B_2(t)) at any point in time is governed by the deterministic cushion identity:

$$B_2(t) = \max\left(0,; W(t) - \frac{F}{(1 + r_f)^{T - t}}\right)$$

By anchoring 85% to 90% of capital in senior secured yield sleeves generating 6.5% to 10.4% annualized carry, Bucket 1 continuously manufactures a riskless cash-flow stream. The Yield-to-Alpha Sweep Engine harvests this accrued Bucket 1 yield and routes it automatically into two destinations:

  1. Self-Funding Asymmetric Alpha: Accruing Bucket 1 yield funds high-conviction Bucket 2 opportunities—including institutional private credit tranches, GP-stake co-investments, and quantitative market-structure strategies—while keeping 100% of initial principal intact at horizon (T).
  2. Zero-Liquidation Capital Call Funding: When a family's private equity or venture capital funds issue a capital call, the engine sweeps accrued Bucket 1 yield first, eliminating the need to sell appreciated public equities and incur capital gains tax.

3. Double-Entry Deterministic Verification

Every movement of capital across Bucket 1 yield sleeves, dry powder buffers, and Bucket 2 alpha allocations is governed by a strict three-way reconciliation invariant:

$$\sum_{i} \text{Custodian & On-Chain Balances}i = \sum{j} \text{Double-Entry Ledger Postings}_j = \text{Reported Client NAV}$$

Any drift exceeding $0.01 immediately halts automated sweep execution and triggers an auditable alert, ensuring institutional fiduciary integrity across both traditional custodial accounts and programmable settlement rails.
